A Community Project By The Rotary Club Of Padstow
The Salvation Army Family Store – Panania
Rotary International is a great supporter of
The Salvation Army by acknowledging the
Army’s contribution to communities throughout the world and offering assistance with
their work. Rotarians are always present and helping at our local area's
Red Shield Appeal
and another example of their assistance was the recent refurbishment of the Panania Corps'
Family Store situated in Tower Street Panania, by the Rotary Club of Padstow.
The store has been in operation for many years and its proceeds assist the Panania Corps in
maintaining their community work. It was badly in need of maintenance and repairs, so Raelene
and Bryce Steep - the previous Captains - approached the Rotary Club of Padstow for some advice.
As the club had assisted with setting up the store some years ago, it gladly took it on again
as another of their community projects.
The store needed cleaning, painting, new floor coverings, and some new fixtures and fittings.
A plan was drawn up in consultation with the Army.
Carpet Choice of Panania offered assistance
with flooring and Classic Resources
- a shopfitting company in Silverwater - provided new fixtures
and fittings. Beginning on the weekend of the 16th & 17th February, the Rotary members got to work.
Rotarians quickly removed all the unwanted fittings, patched, repaired and painted the ceiling and
walls, carried out maintenance to and cleaned the windows and doors, installed some new lighting,
and fitted new fluorescent tubes to the existing shop lighting. The new carpet was laid on the Sunday
and Monday, and on the Monday and Tuesday the shopfitters installed the new fixtures including new
shelving and hanging throughout, a new sorting bench, service counter, fitting room and mirrors.
On Wednesday Salvation Army staff re-stocked the store, and it re-opened for business on Thursday
21st February.
The store is now brighter and more customer friendly, practical use is made of space, moveable and
adjustable fittings cater for seasonal stock movements, and both staff and customers enjoy a
pleasurable ambience in which to work and shop.
