Graham & Sheryn
The 2009 District 9690 Group Study Exchange team to District 4710 in Pilar Brazil were represented by Team Leader Graham Wilson and team member Sheryn Phillips.
- The team consisted of:
- Graham Wilson, team leader,
- Kathryn Ginn, a police officer (sponsored by Liverpool West),
- Sheryn Phillips, a pharmacist (sponsored by Springwood),
- Lucy Emery, the Residential Life Co-ordinator at UTS (sponsored by Springwood), and
- Kathy Nash, a psychologist (sponsored by Lower Blue Mountains).
- The team went to District 4710 in Pilar Brazil.
- Colonised by Portugal in 1500. Population 184 million – 5th highest in world.
- 2007 figures (Brazil/Australia).
- GDP US$8,200 63rd/US$47,400 13th.
- 58% forest in Brazil.
- 18% Desert in Australia.
- Links between Brazil and Australia through Arthur Phillip.
- District 4710 – 54 clubs range of 10-50 members – total 1,160 members with 4 Rotaract Clubs.
- Southwest State has Iguacu Falls.
- Travelled 3,500 kms and received very good hospitality.
- They gave 12 presentations to 16 clubs – all in Portuguese.
- Spoke at conference to 300 people.
- There are different levels of Pharmacies in Brazil – Private where you can buy anything without a script, Public which is cheaper but you need scripts and Free but these have limited stocks.
- Rotary does a lot of work in psychiatric clinics etc and other welfare areas (no Social Security).
- Food and coffee was a big part of the trip.
- After the GSE trip the 4 girls did a trip. Graham came home to Helen.
