Belgian presentation
Laurence Sirjacobs is our Youth Exchange student from Belgium, and - as usually happens - she was given the oportunity to inform the members about her home country - Belgium. Some of Laurence's presentation, reduced to point form, appears below.
- Capital – Brussels
- Languages – Flemish, French, Dutch and German
- Population – 10million
- Money – Euros
- Independence Day – 21st July
- Country is split into 3 main areas – the different areas all speak a mixture of different languages
- Culinary – Chocolate, Mussels and Fries, Beer, Waffles both Brussels and Leige
- Famous Buildings/Places – L’Atomium, Grand Place of Brussels, Le Palais Royale, Rue Neuve (Brussels Shopping street) and Cinquantenalle – Belgium’s Arc de Triomphe
- Famous Statues – Manneken Piss, The Lion of Waterloo
- Famous People – Jean-Claude Van Damme, Herge (creator of Tintin), Kim Klijsters and Peyo (the creator of Smurfs)
- You can cross Belgium in 4 hours
- Laurence lives near Waterloo. When she gets home she wants to study Hotel Management. To do this she will need to learn 4 languages – French, Flemish, English and Spanish.
