Angela Buntic
Angela Buntic did her master’s in nutrition in dietetics at Sydney University. She loves to support clients on removing excess weight through diet. Portions of her presentation appear below:
- I work with the general population in helping make people healthier.
- Tonight I’m going to talk about overweight, obesity, diet, what works and what doesn’t.
- 25% of Australian kids and 60% of Australian adults are overweight or obese.
- Humans are designed to store fat, but we don’t need to as we get regular meals.
- In the last 50 years, lifestyle has changed; we have labour-saving devices, take-away meals, a lot of tv, and we can’t walk in safety as we once did.
- There are a lot of fad diets around. If you want to know whether it’s a fad diet, there are 4 questions:
- Is it overly restrictive?
- Does it focus on only 1 type of food?
- Does it allow less than 5,000 kilojoules per day?
- Does it promise rapid weight loss?
- Factors that influence weight loss are:
- Psychological, social, and environmental factors
- Nutrition
- Exercise
- Healthy eating requires 5 serves of vegetables, 2 serves of fruit, and 3 serves of reduced-fat dairy per day.
- Tips for weight loss:
- Don’t skip meals.
- Reduce portion size.
- Eat to hunger, not to habit.
- Slow meals down.
- Choose low-fat dairy.
- Use low-fat methods to cook.
- Keep well-hydrated.
- Use lo-cal beverages (not fruit juice).
- Choose treats wisely. Snacks should be less than 400 kilojoules.
- Remove temptation from home, office, car, etc.
- Angela showed a cartoon of a doctor asking a patient, “What suits your busy schedule better – exercising 1 hour a day, or being dead 24 hours a day?”]
