Warren's Nepal Trip
Member Warren Bond, though on a leave of absence, attended to keep the Club abreast of work that Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) has been doing in Nepal. Some of Warren's presentation follows:
- I’ve just come back from 2 weeks in Nepal. I went to see the hospital which is being upgraded as a RAWCS project. RAWCS sends people to many developing nations.
- At the hospital we put in new ceilings after tearing out the old ceilings first. We changed the level of the ceiling, and electricians did the wiring.
- The hospital is run by the Adventist Development Relief Agency.
- The Club has supported a couple of children in Nepal. Their mother took leave to be able to come to the hospital to do lunches for us.
- We also wired the local school so they could have light in winter. The school has bars in the windows, and no doors.
- The Australian Ambassador to Nepal came to the school open day, and everyone bent his ear about doing something for the school.
- The hospital treats everyone, regardless of politics or wealth.
- We usually go once or twice a year, with no end in sight.
- While we were there, a surgical team from Sydney arrived to treat burns victims and the scars that result. Sometimes, people’s limbs end up welded to their body by the scar tissue.
- We try to pass on building skills to the local people.
- We put in medical machines which are obsolete by Australian standards but still very useful. For instance, a Phillips technician will go along to ensure a machine is installed properly.
- All volunteers pay their own way, but that is tax-deductible as it is done through RAWCS.
