Checking the Points
After Jean Mullick introduced Barry McConville, he read the poem, The Value of One Member, from the Rotary Club of Morehead City-Noon, North Carolina, USA.
The Value of One Member
Ten little Rotarians standing in a line.
Eight creative members had ideas good as heaven.
Six members remained with spirit and drive.
Four cheerful members who never disagreed,
Two lonely members, my rhyme is nearly done.
One faithful member, feeling rather blue,
Four determined members, just wouldn't wait, |
Barry posed a series of questions that provided the framework and impetus for a vigorous debate on the topic of membership. The questions included:
- What do we expect from membership?
- Whose responsibility is member growth?
- How do we view a membership program?
- Will we undertake a membership program?
- Should we set a target for this year?
When the members reached consensus on the last two questions (Yes, and 10% increase, respectively), Barry took to the whiteboard to write down brainstormed items. After consideration, the members decided that the Membership Committee should steer the process, co-opting others as necessary, and that an immediate start was desirable.
The final word for the night was a request for everyone to think about bringing along someone to share Rotary.
