The Club was in the fortunate position of having two young representatives come back to report on their involvement with some of the Club's events for young people.
Jessica Reardon - Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA)
- On the 24th of July, Year 10 from Santa Sabina High School went to RYDA at the Penrith Regatta Centre.
- We had 6 seminars:
- Hazard perception, dealing with accidents.
- Safe celebrating and driver fatigue, which dealt with drinking, standard drinks, and the time it takes alcohol to pass through the system.
- Stopping distance, which showed the distance it took to stop at various speeds.
- Your choice, in which the police spoke about a real accident with real footage. They also spoke about the "suicide seat" (the passenger seat) and the "4 o'clock knock" where police officers have to knock on a family's door at 4am to tell them that a loved one has died in an accident.
- Accidents do happen. This was to be presented by accident survivors, but unfortunately both presenters were sick on the day. We did learn about brain injuries, though, and that these sort of injuries affected mainly men, and rarely women.
- Financial and legal responsibilities, which were about the costs of car ownership, including payments and insurance.
- What I got out of RYDA was I learnt how to be safe. Other students said of the course that it "forced us to face consequences" and "going a bit slower can save someone's life".
Kathleen Finneran - Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA)
- We had prepared for MUNA, and thought we were ready but we were wrong.
- When other teams presented, we heard terms from legal and social studies.
- Things got off to a slow start, but rapidly became passionate.
- We learnt skills and different ways of learning than at school.
- Thanks to the Rotary Club of Padstow for sponsoring MUNA.
