Eye Help
After going to Mongolia as part of a self-funded optometry team, Sharon, Jenny, and Renate returned to give the Club a report. Following are some highlights of that report.
- The team used an E eye chart to test for vision problems.
- About 3,000 people were tested by the team, mostly children.
- All land in Mongolia is state-owned, but the fencing law allowed people to claim what they fenced.
- The yurt, a circular tent of skins or felt, is still commonly used for housing, even in cities where a family might use one while waiting for a house or unit to be built.
- Local crafts include rug or wall-hanging making. The sale of one such item can support a family for a year.
- Even though the Soviets left in the 1990’s, their influence is still seen in schools with the wearing of uniforms.
- Blue Sky Aviation, which flew the team to their destination, operates in 139 undeveloped countries.
