Hospital Opened

The big news for the week was the opening of the Dr Eugenio Neri Jr. Hospital in Cebu, Philippines. The facility - devoted to women's health - has medical staff, and only requires equipment. This hospital was the lifelong ambition of a Churches of Christ Minister, Dr Eugenio Neri Jr, but he died at age 53 from cancer without fulfilling his dream. Maurie and others with the aid of DIK and RAWCS have now completed the hospital. Maurie & Jeiji Abbott were in attendance at the opening of the newly renovated / completed building. as was President Keith Roffey who was the keynote speaker. A DVD of the opening ceremony will be shown at a future Club meeting.

The Club Leadership Plan

There was much discussion on the merits and weaknesses of the Club leadership Plan.

Over the time the C.L.P has been "on trial" in our club (we volunteered to do this 3-4 years ago and were one of the very few clubs in Australia if not the only club to carry the plan through to the end result). R.I. had good reports from world wide clubs and adopted the plan but forgot that we were still "on trial".

There have been many changes to the original American concept of the plan and each club is able to adapt and adjust the plan to its own needs.

In the beginning it was top heavy with Administration and our Service programs seemed to take last place. This has been amended over the last few years and now our club is being held up as an example of the best way to make the plan work.

There is now more emphasis on P.R. and advertising on what Rotary stands for, and all our programs and community based projects have been well advertised in the local press and our membership retention is good.

We now have a better understanding of how The Rotary Foundation works and how we can benefit from funds donated to the foundation being received back as special grants to further community based projects.

Barry Thompson will be in Evanston in a few weeks and will report on our clubs improved performance under the Club Leadership Plan.

In the coming years all clubs will be required to function within the CLP and even now there are many Districts in Australia adopting the plan with the aim of developing leaders at Club level who will progress to District level and above.
