Reverend Barry McAlister
The Reverend Barry McAlister gave the Club a presentation on the way that a local church - St Mark's Anglican Church - was working to combat the twin problems of illiteracy and innumeracy among students. After engaging a teaching professional to develop a syllabus, the church then found volunteers who work within that framework to develop the skills and confidence of the students by tutoring them. Most of the students are in Grades 2 to 4. Rev. Barry, in response to a question, said that he tried to work closely with local schools and teachers to make the service an effective one.
